The game's director Joe Shely told Polygon in an interview at a roundtable in a roundtable D2R Items interview that "having your character appear to be a collection of choices you've made can lead to interesting decisions, or at a minimum, intriguing opportunities."Shely declared she believes that the Diablo Team is well aware of the fact that gamers, particularly beginning, may not be fully aware of each class' set of capabilities. "When you examine our respec systems" Shely said, "which apply to both the skills tree as well as Paragon to later levels that is our final game development system. "We've endeavored to do it in a way which makes you feel that making a decision is important, and your character is not like everyone else's character, but that you've got plenty of freedom to test things out.
"You've gained the capability to respec point by point. It's easy to unspend a point and put it towards another item however, as you progress deeper into levels, the cost goes up to make those choices more thoughtful. Of course, it is possible to also respec your whole tree at once , if you want to rebuild from the start."
Fergusson pointed out that as players get deeper and deeper into their character "the in-game currency cost to respect becomes higher and higher until you get to the point where you're playing buy d2r items a Level 90 Barbarian and instead of changing my build , it's more beneficial to roll a fresh Barbarian and start all over."
